Gateway School programs (grades 5–12) are designed to provide a strong educational
foundation for students with dyslexia, other specific learning disabilities, and/or attention
deficit disorder. These students demonstrate normal intellectual potential but experience
difficulties in a regular classroom due to delay difficulties in reading, writing, spelling, and
other skills. The staff encourages emotional growth and value development. Gateway School
maintains ongoing research into techniques and methodologies of curriculum development.
A student's ability in reading, comprehension, spelling, decoding, and handwriting are
developed. Courses include English, mathematics, drama, history, computer literacy, physical
education, foreign language, speech, social studies, health, and social skills. (See Curriculum
requirements.)
Classes range in size from 5–10 students. Each child's progress is carefully measured utilizing
a variety of assessments in academic, social, and behavioral performance. Additional
counseling support service is available to students and their families through the school.
Parents receive progress reports every three weeks and report cards after the sixth week.
Students are not given the option to neglect an assignment and receive a zero in the grade
book. Expectations are clearly defined by holding each student responsible for completion of
his or her work. Students are encouraged and supported to succeed. In addition, parent-
teacher conferences are scheduled as requested and needed. Staff members are also available
for consultation.
The staff at Gateway School is very involved in all aspects of students' learning and emotional
growth. Gateway School's focus is on the total child.
